Subwoofer Displacement

The displacement of a subwoofer is the amount of air space the subwoofer itself takes up. Once the subwoofer is in place, this amount of air is no longer available inside the enclosure. When designing your box, you’ll need to account for this lack of available air from the overall (gross) volume. If you’re swapping woofers into an existing box, calculate your net volume. You want to make sure your available volume of air is enough for the new woofers.

Use the figures in the displacement table below to help you calculate your box volume. If you don’t see the displacement for your woofer, you can also check your subwoofer series page for more information.

Once you know the displacement, simply subtract it from the gross volume of your enclosure. This tells you exactly what volume of air is available for the woofer to move. We call this the net volume.

You’ll usually see displacement and volume figures as a number of cubic feet. If the displacement specs for your sub is in cubic inches, it’s an easy conversion. Just divide the number of cubic inches by 1728.
